Objective Structured Practical Examination in Public Health Dentistry: An Assessment of Dental Students¡¯ Attitude

Abstract
Objective: The objective structured practical examination (OSPE) is a reliable and established practical examination system that assesses competence and practical professional skills of medical and dental students by rotating the student round a number of stations. The objective of the present study was to assess the attitude of final year dental students towards the OSPE in Public Health Dentistry, in a private dental college in Mangalore, Karnataka, India.

Methods: A questionnaire survey was undertaken among the final year undergraduate dental students. A Likert-type scale containing 10 items 5 was used to assess the attitudes of fourth year dental students at A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, towards the OSPE in Public Health Dentistry.

Results: The overall mean attitude score of 3.60 was towards the favourable side. Item wise mean attitude scores indicated that the attitudes of the undergraduate medical students were favourable towards all the items. Majority of the students felt that checklists provide a fair and are good means of evaluation and that OSPE is a reliable type of practical examination. Around 69.7% of the students strongly agreed that OSPE is a good form of examination as well as learning experience.

Conclusion: The study concluded that the undergraduate students have shown favorable attitudes towards OSPE in Public Health Dentistry.
